CHOIRS: Bringing Hope Through Harmony

Singing together at The Leveson Centre provides a warm, supportive and uplifting space for individuals whose lives have recently been affected by cancer — whether through their own diagnosis or that of a loved one. Through the power of music and singing together, we aim to bring comfort, connection and joy to those navigating difficult times.

Singing greatly improves our emotional, mental, physical, and social wellbeing, with a decrease in stress, depression, and anxiety as studies show. In addition, singing in a choir, particularly for individuals facing health challenges, offers profound therapeutic benefits that extend beyond the physical.

There are two choirs at The Leveson Centre every Tuesday, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Both choirs are led by community musician and choir leader Nicola Betts.

About our choirs

The Leveson Centre hosts two choir sessions every Tuesday; one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Choir members can choose to attend either the morning or afternoon session based on their preference and eligibility.

The Leveson Centre provides a sanctuary where people can find solace, strength, and connection. Our choirs bring people together through the power of singing collectively and singing sessions are joyous, friendly and uplifting, creating a supportive network and a wonderful sense of camaraderie that will help to boost your emotional resilience and sense of overall well-being in the midst of life's challenges.

To ensure that we can best support our choir members, we ask that all participants complete an onboarding form which outlines our eligibility criteria.

Our Core Values: Both community choirs are built on the belief that singing collectively is uplifting and encourages wellbeing and self-care, and that everyone, regardless of experience or life stage, can find joy in singing together. With a welcoming and judgment-free atmosphere, the choir encourages new members to join – no auditions, no expectations, just the simple joy of singing together.

Music has the power to heal the soul, lift our spirits and soothe our hearts - even in the face of life's greatest challenges.

Location, Day and Time

The Leveson Centre hosts two sessions every Tuesday; one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

Choir members can choose to attend either the morning or afternoon session based on their preference and eligibility. Here is a brief outline of each choir session:

MORNING CHOIR: Tuesday mornings from 10.30am-12pm. Refreshments and social time from 10.30-11am.
The morning choir is suitable for people who can attend regularly.

AFTERNOON CHOIR: Tuesday afternoons from 1.30pm-3pm. Refreshments and social time in a mid-way break. The afternoon Sing-along choir has a more relaxed approach and is for people who prefer to ‘drop in’ as their time allows. This choir also welcomes regular attendees.

At various points throughout the year, both choirs will come together for joint singing sessions and performances.

Both singing groups are based at The Leveson Centre (Community Stadium, Kathryn Ave, Huntington, York YO32 9AF). They are predominantly Wellbeing Choirs, and everyone is welcome to both. There’s no need for any prior experience – simply come along and pick up a song sheet. We’d love to see you there!

To ensure that we can best support our choir members, we ask that all participants complete an onboarding form which outlines our eligibility criteria. For more information about the eligibility criteria, please get in touch.

Our choirs are a truly joyful addition to The Leveson Centre
